Aldershot Constituency Liberal Democrats have selected their Parlimentary Candidate for the General Election in 2015. Alan Hilliar a well known local Liberal Democrat gave a thought provoking speech at the selection meeting. An extract from his speech is below:

'The truth is that this country and this constituency need the Lib Dems like never before.

Without us, the electorate face a choice between the Tories who resent any positive change, Labour who have no idea of what change they want and UKIP who believe that by turning back the clock fifty years we'll enter a new golden age.

'The Lib Dems still are the only party with a vision for Britain for the 21st century.

At the risk of giving away my age, I started out as a member of the young Liberals at the tender age of thirteen. I was out on anti apartheid marches as well as being an active member of the local party.

So protest against injustice is in my blood. It defines who I am. And that same motivation runs deep inside many Lib Dems.

At one level, I'm just a fairly ordinary person. I've been married to Carolyn for nearly forty years, and we have two grown up children, both happily married, and three grandchildren. We're part of our local Anglican church where we live in Ash, where I'm an occasional preacher. I'm an amateur singer and perform in local amateur musicals. I work as a self employed business consultant.

I can bring ideas, imagination, energy and a fresh approach. I can help refocus our efforts including rebuilding our base of activists.

If you're prepared to play your part in working with me and the rest of the Lib Dem team, then I can promise you that the next year or so will be a lot more challenging and a lot more interesting for us all. And we can start to make an impact in this constituency that will scare the pants off the other parties.
